LNG (Liquefied Natural Gas) has the hazard class "Extremely flammable" and mainly consists of methane gas (91%) and ethane gas (8%). Natural gas is odorless so an odorant is added to the gas so that it is possible to detect possible leakages.

Natural gas is:

  • Not toxic, but in closed rooms it will displace air

  • Lighter than air so any gas leakages will therefore rise

  • Flammable in a mixture ratio of 5-15% in air

Gas Leak Detection

In the event of a gas leak or fire inside one of our storage tanks or evaporator installation, detectors will activate a signal to automatically shut off the gas from the tank. Lights on the roof of the container control room which is located beside the storage tank will flash at the same time as a siren will sound. An alarm is simultaneously sent to redo's duty personnel.

Natural gas is not toxic, but in the event of a gas leak, it is important to remove possible sources of ignition, so that the gas does not ignite. Natural gas is lighter than air and will rise in the direction the wind.

In the event of an incident, the emergency services must be notified immediately.

  • Ring 110 for Fire

  • Ring 112 for Police

  • Ring 113 for Medical emergency assistance

  • Ring redo's Emergency number: +47 476 72 395

Persons in the area must immediately move away from the facility by foot and follow information from the accident site manager. Redo's emergency service will also be deployed, however it will be the emergency services that will have overall responsibility to lead the response to the accident. Information about the incident will be available on the emergency services' websites.

Major Accident Facilities

Several of redo’s gas terminals are required to have emergency response plans according to the Directorate for Civil Protection and Emergency Planning (DSB). The DSB plays a crucial role in ensuring safety, civil protection, and emergency preparedness in Norway, acting as the national authority for disaster risk management and regulatory oversight in relation to major accidents and emergency situations.

Below you will find public information (in Norwegian) related to our gas terminals which fall under DBS regulation.
